How to Make Money Using AI Tools
Two years ago, I was broke and frustrated.
I had a laptop, decent writing skills, and zero idea what to do with them. A friend told me to "just use AI tools." I laughed. I genuinely thought those things were for coders and corporate guys — not for someone like me who could barely afford a Spotify subscription.
Then one random Tuesday night, I tried it. Like actually sat down and tried. And within three weeks, I had made my first $200 online.
I'm not saying this to brag. I'm saying it because I wasted months being skeptical, and I don't want you to do the same thing.
So here's what actually works.
Writing for Businesses — and Getting Paid Well for It
Every single business out there needs words. Website copy. Blog posts. Product descriptions. Email campaigns. The demand is insane and the supply of good writers is always short.
Now here's the thing — AI doesn't replace writers. It just makes a good writer faster. I use tools like ChatGPT to get a rough draft going, and then I rewrite almost everything in my own voice. I add examples, fix the tone, cut the fluff. The final piece is mine, but I got there in half the time.
I started charging $50 per article on Fiverr. Within two months, I bumped it to $120. Clients don't care how you write — they care that it sounds good and comes in on time.
Selling Digital Products You Make Once
This one changed how I think about money.
A digital product — an eBook, a template, a prompt guide — takes effort to create once. After that, it just sits there and sells. No inventory. No shipping. No customer sitting across from you complaining.
Pick something you know even a little about. Cooking? Make a meal-planning template. HR work? Sell an interview question bank. Fitness? Write a 4-week beginner workout guide. AI helps you structure it, fill in the gaps, and even write most of the content.
I put together a simple Notion productivity template last year. Spent one weekend on it. It has sold 300+ times since then on Gumroad. That math works out very nicely.
Doing What Local Businesses Are Terrible At
Walk into any small local business and look at their Instagram page. Half of them haven't posted in four months. Their Google review responses are either missing or copy-pasted. Their website still says "© 2019."
These people need help. And they will pay monthly for it.
You can manage their social media using AI to draft captions and content ideas. You can respond to their reviews with personalized but AI-assisted replies. You can send their customers a monthly email using a simple tool like Mailchimp plus ChatGPT.
Charge $300 to $600 a month per client. Get five clients and you've quietly built a business that runs mostly on systems you set up once.
Thumbnails, Videos, and Visual Content
This one surprised me the most.
Creators on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok constantly need visual content — thumbnails, short clips, audiograms, promotional graphics. Most of them either don't have the skills or don't have the time.
I started designing thumbnails using Canva and Midjourney. No design degree. No Photoshop wizardry. Just good taste and a willingness to learn what makes people click. I charged $15 per thumbnail starting out. Now I do packages.
Tools like RunwayML also let you create short AI-generated videos from text prompts. The market for this stuff is still early, which means less competition and more room to stand out.
Building an Audience Around One Specific Topic
This is the slowest path but maybe the most powerful one.
Pick a topic you genuinely find interesting. AI tools for teachers. Budget travel in your 30s. Investing on a small salary. Something specific, not something broad like "make money online."
Start a newsletter or a blog. Use AI to help you come up with ideas, research faster, and structure your thoughts — but write it yourself. Your actual opinions, your actual experiences. That's what keeps people coming back.
When your audience grows even a little, it opens doors. Sponsors reach out. Affiliate links start converting. You can sell your own product directly to people who already trust you.
The Part Nobody Tells You
Most people download five AI tools, play around for a week, and then quit because they didn't instantly make $10,000.
That's not how it works.
What actually works is picking one of these things, sticking with it for two or three months, and treating it seriously. Wake up and work on it before your main job. Stay up an extra hour. Get uncomfortable. Charge less at first so you can get reviews and build confidence.
AI gives you speed and scale. But the direction, the decisions, the relationships — that's still on you.
And honestly? That's a good thing. Because it means the humans who actually put in the work will always have an edge over the ones who just press a button and hope.
